Spatial techniques are increasingly used to observe the ocean and to study the water cycle (satellites from the JASON family and soon the hydraulic satellite SWOT…) By joining the “7th Continent” expedition, the CNES seeks to raise awareness in youngsters about the problem of plastic pollution in the ocean thanks to the ARGONAUTICA project.
SCIENTIFIC PARTNER: L’AGENCE SPATIALE EUROPÉENNE (ESA)
The European Space Agency (ESA) and the Chair of Earth Observation and Remote Sensing of the Institute of Environmental Engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zürich (ETHZ) contribute to the project 7th Continent Expedition by assessing the capability of satellites to monitor the Great Garbage Patches. The investigations are performed with the satellites TerraSAR-X operated by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and Sentinel-1 operated by ESA. Images were acquired in real-time with the ship positions during the 7th Continent Expedition in the North Pacific in May 2013 and in the North Atlantic in May 2014. Satellite radar images from Envisat’s ASAR and the SAR instruments on ERS-1 and -2, along with optical images from Envisat’s MERIS instrument are available in the ESA archives and their use are considered for the investigations. It is expected to provide new scientific knowledge for the detection of pelagic plastics.
SCIENTIFIC PARTNER: IMRCP (CNRS-UNIVERSITÉ PAUL SABATIER)
A laboratory researcher from this institution will take part in the expedition to collect plastic debris. Samples of fish caught on sight will also be collected. These studies are undertaken in order to determine whether the plastic debris contain organic pollutants such as PCB (polychlorinated biphenyls), DDT or bisphenol A and whether they can enter the food chain. A new type of organogel-based sensor, developed at the IMRCP lab, will also be used to detect organic pollutants potentially present in seawater. These samples will be analysed in collaboration with the Midi Pyrenées Observatory to determine whether they carry heavy metals such as mercury…
